Zachary Ezra Rawlins is quietly perusing books in his university library that is, until he discovers a mysterious book in which a story from his childhood appears. This discovery takes Zachary on an adventure through many doors into new worlds, discovering tales of unrequited love, pirate prisoners, stardust and interwoven stories.
Every time I think about The Starless Sea I wobble between giving it a 2 star and a 3 star.
This book made me feel like I wasn’t intelligent enough to understand it. It’s like you’re not meant to get what’s happening until you read it all the way through again, which I will not be doing (for now anyway!) The first 300 pages were pretty dry. I enjoyed the stories that alternated with the main ‘plot’ but it really seems like this book is trying too hard. It’s waffly and overly complicated whilst not having a coherent plot.
The last approximately 200 pages were way more interesting- at points I was even thinking “Was I too harsh before? Could this be a 4star read?” The plot picked up, we had another layer of intrigue, and it seemed like things might finally be starting to make sense! Alas, we went straight back into long, unnecessary descriptions of absolutely every aspect of the setting and I began to lose track of what is actually going on.
Overall, for those looking for the next The Night Circus, you will likely be disappointed. This book has none of the plot or pacing and you’ll probably be left, like me, skimming huge chunks of text and finding you missed absolutely nothing.
As for my final rating, I initially felt it deserved 3 stars because I was somewhat entertained and did not actively dislike this book. I just wished it had been written in a way that did justice to the concept. However, on reflection I have knocked this down to a 2 star rating. Thinking on it, the lack of motivation for anything that happens, the insta-love robbing me of what could have been a great MLM romance, the fact there was zero plot… I just can’t justify giving it 3stars.
