Prepare to lose your heart… and then lose it again
When I was lucky enough to be gifted a copy of The Beholder by my lovely friend Pauliina from The Bookaholic Dreamer I had no idea how much I was going to enjoy this book.
The first chapter of The Beholder introduces us to Selah, the daughter of the leader of Potomac. It is her duty to get married and lead her people but a planned proposal doesn’t quite go to plan.
After a cringe-inducing rejection from her childhood friend, her wicked stepmother sends Selah on the the journey of a lifetime, meeting a series of potential partners. But the pressure is on as she must come home with a suitor – or not at all.
But as Selah makes progress with her journey, it seems like her stepmother isn’t the only one scheming. She will need to trust her instincts to figure out who’s really on her side and who has ulterior motives.

I’ve been in and out of a reading slump for the last month or so, and when Pauliina (The Bookaholic Dreamer) was up for a buddy-read I was very keen.
From the very first page I was hooked.
- Dramatic introduction ✓
- Fairy tale inspiration ✓
- Non-stop romance? ✓
I was really thinking, “Urgh, I’ve been in a bad mood and I have cramps, no book is going to get me to feel something right now.” How wrong I was.
I fell in love with each character, especially the potential suitors, and of course, loved Selah. She is the perfect protagonist: she’s fiery, loving, open-hearted and stands up for herself. We love to see it.
Yes, the plot was often a bit predictable, and some of the plot “twists” were screamingly obvious but I don’t even care. This was one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read all year and I’ll happily recommend it to anyone.
Naturally, I’ve already started the sequel which I’m buddy-reading again with Pauliina.
Perfect for fans of: The Selection and Fairytale retellings
