    The Christmas Readathon 2023!

‘Tis the season to be cosy, and what better way to usher in the festive cheer than with a Christmas Readathon to keep you company in the cold, dark nights of December.

From the 17th to the 31st of December we will be following reading prompts inspired by Charles Dickens’ classic, ‘A Christmas Carol’- one of my absolute favourite books.

The prompts are designed for you to take what you like, adapt as you wish, and leave any you want. There’s certainly no pressure to read only Christmas books, and doubling (or tripling) up on prompts is encouraged for those who wish.

We would love if you shared your TBRs, what you’re reading, and any fun moments throughout the readathon over on either Instagram or Twitter. Check the bottom of the page for both mine and Ceri Louise Reads’ pages. On there, you will also find graphics for posting your TBRs and the prompts page.

    1. Scrooge: Read a book with an unlikeable character

    2. Ghost of Christmas Past: read a book set in a different time period

    3. Ghost of Christmas Present: Jolabokaflod. Buy someone a book and spend some of Christmas Eve reading.

This prompt comes from the Icelandic tradition and has been a part of this readathon from the beginning. The idea is that you buy someone a book, and someone else buys you one and you both read on Christmas Eve.

    4. Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come: Read a book with magic or a supernatural element

    5. Fezziwig: Read a feel-good book

    6. Bob Cratchit: Enjoy some time outdoors with an audiobook

(Of course, feel free to adapt this however you like!)

    7. Jacob Marley: Read A Christmas Carol and/or watch an adaption of your choice.

Our favourite just has to be The Muppet Christmas Carol, which although not entirely faithful to the book, is full of fun and captures the feel well.

    8. Tiny Tim: Take a break from reading and do something nice for a friend, family member, or stranger.

This could be anything, but here are a few ideas:

    • Bake a friend some biscuits
    • Take supplies to an animal shelter
    • Pick up litter.
    • Donate food to your local food bank (you can find your closest one in the UK here)
    • Donate blood
    • Feed the birds (remember they also need water throughout the winter. They can be at risk when temperatures drop below zero!)
    • You could also make a donation to a charity, here are some suggestions, with a link to their charity PayPal pages

    Scottish Book Trust

    Samaritans

    RNLI

    Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

So, get wrapped up under your cosiest blanket, make a hot drink, and join us throughout the second half of December for this festive fun.
